From Gustav Mahler: Memories and Letters, by Alma Mahler, pages 197-198 ‘The End’
During his last days and while his mind was still unclouded his thoughts often went anxiously to Schoenberg. ‘If I go, he will have nobody left.’ I promised him to do everything in my power. Moll too promised to stand by Schoenberg.
After Mahler’s death, Moll told friends of ours what he had said and they resolved forthwith to collect a considerable sum and to put it at my disposal year by year for the benefit of young musicians. I chose Strauss, Busoni, and Walter as trustees of the fund, and at my request the proceeds frequently went to Schoenberg. War and inflation have unfortunately made it worthless.
